I had a long talk with John. I could tell his heart was broken without Leslie at his side. He told me the home told him not to come daily so Leslie could adjust to her surroundings. One always knew where they stood with John. He had a wonderful life as Leslie was a wonderful homemaker. He was proud of her, their children and grandchildren. He talked of seeing his old buddies at the Curtis. He enjoyed their friendship. He also told me he liked shovelling his driveway. He never wanted to burden his family as he knew they were busy. He appreciated the family help take things away he no longer needed. I believe John died from a broken heart. He was a good man. My sincere condolences to Leslie and family. - Posted by: Lynne Cooper (family friend) on: Mar 16, 2026

I am so sad to see this. My sincere condolences to the entire family. I will always appreciate that John told my mom about finding out where her son Leonard(my brother) was and how we connected as a family because of it. I only met my aunt Trixie and uncle Eben (John’s mom and dad) a few times, but my mom talked about John a lot. May he Rest In Peace - Posted by: Debbie Schmidt (nee Keeley) (Cousin) on: Mar 15, 2026

My Thoughts and Prayers to The Officer Family. John 'The Gentle Giant' was a True Gentleman! Will always cherish the wonderful memories when our paths crossed at a hockey rink or baseball diamond. John was the Ken Dryden for the North Kildonan Cobras Oldtimers Hockey Team that my Dad played on. Thank you John, for giving back to the River East Community. Your legacy will live on forever. - Posted by: Kim Kozak (Friend: NK Cobra/River East Hockey) on: Mar 15, 2026

I knew John at both Honeywell and Health Sciences Centre. His dry humour and gruff honesty, as well as pride of family will always be front of mind when I think of him. RIP. - Posted by: Marc Beaudry (Former work colleague) on: Mar 14, 2026
